Malaysia's energy consumption is expected to grow by 3.5%-4.5% over the next five years, with demand stemming from strong economic growth and the bulk of this demand is set to be met with new installed capacity by Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB).
The demand for power is expected to shadow gross domestic product (GDP) growth at between 4.5% and 5.0% in 2013.Energy demand is expected to reach 20,700MW by 2020 from 15,826MW in 2012, spurred by the New Economic Model, Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and the country's strong GDP growth.
To meet this increase in demand, TNB plans to invest RM9.7 billion over the next five years to build new power capacity.
The maximum demand of the grid system in Peninsular Malaysia increased by 2.7% from 15,072MW in 2010 to 15,476MW in 2011. Out of the total generation capacity, 7,054MW came from TNB and the remaining capacity from independent power producers (IPP).
In Sabah, the total generation capacity increased from 779.7MW in 2010 to 830.1MW in 2011 while Sarawak generated 1,091MW in 2010 and this increased to 1,278MW in 2011.
The Malaysian government has also introduced policy initiatives and given emphasis on renewable energy (RE) and the RE target is 5.5% of Malaysia's total electricity generation by 2015.
