Two New Publications on Tackling Urban Challenges Launched at the World Cities Summit 2012
SINGAPORE, Jul 02, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - Two new publications aimed at helping urban leaders identify practical solutions and share good practices to create liveable and sustainable cities, were launched by the Centre for Liveable Cities, Singapore (CLC) at the World Cities Summit 2012 today.
CLC's inaugural issue of its flagship periodical, the 'Urban Solutions' magazine, will be distributed free of charge to a global audience comprising leaders of hundreds of major cities, particularly those with more than one million inhabitants, as well as to prominent industry experts. Response to the magazine has been positive, with several leading experts and organisations keen to contribute to subsequent publications of the magazine.
Thought-provoking Essays are contributed by urban design and planning luminaries - this issue features Sir Peter Hall (Bartlett Professor of Planning and Regeneration, Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning, University College London, UK), Dr Cheong Koon Hean (CEO, Housing & Development Board, Singapore), Dr Alfonso Vegara (President, Fundacion Metropoli, Spain), and Yang Baojun (Vice Director, China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, China). The inaugural Interview is with Dr Liu Thai Ker, (Chairman/ CLC, Director, RSP Architects Planners & Engineers).
Underscoring the significance of the burgeoning integrated urban solutions industry, stakeholders in the public and private sectors have responded to the publication with keen interest. CLC is also publishing for the first time its original research on the "CLC Framework on Liveable and Sustainable Cities" unveiled by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday. The 'Singapore Urban Systems Studies Booklet Series' draws on CLC's original Urban Systems Studies research into Singapore's development over the last half-century. Each booklet is focused on a different 'urban system' - namely water, transport, housing, planning, the economy, and the environment. The booklets are produced in collaboration with Government agencies, and they tap on exclusive interviews with past and present leaders. These practitioner-centric booklets present a succinct overview and highlight key principles of Singapore's development model.
The inaugural booklet in this series launched today is 'Water: From Scarce Resource to National Asset', developed in partnership with PUB, Singapore's national water agency. The booklet recounts Singapore's remarkable water story success and delicate balancing act as one of the world's most water-stressed countries.
PUB Chairman Mr Tan Gee Paw commended the effort, "The Water Urban Systems Study succinctly captures how Singapore was able to turn its water constraints into a virtue. The launch of the publications is a co-located event at this year's World Cities Summit (WCS), a global premier platform for city leaders and experts to exchange new ideas on liveable and sustainable urban solutions, explore the latest technologies and forge new business partnerships. The third edition of WCS is currently being held from 1 to 4 July 2012 at the Sands Expo & Convention Center, Marina Bay Sands, in Singapore.
