- Enhanced transportation infrastructure aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Macau

TOKYO, Dec 3, 2024 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has completed the delivery of the Macau Light Rapid Transit(1) (Macau LRT) Seac Pai Van and Hengqin Extension Lines. This comes after the completion of Barra Extension Line(2) delivered last year, which was awarded by the Public Works Bureau (DSOP) of the Macau Special Administrative Region of China. The Seac Pai Van Line and the Hengqin Line commenced commercial operation on November 1 and December 2, respectively.

Macau LRT Seac Pai Van Extension Line

The new lines are an extension of the Taipa Line (11 stations, 9.3 km), which was delivered by MHI in 2019. These include the Seac Pai Van Extension Line (2 stations and a transfer station expansion, 1.6 km) which connects to Seac Pai Van, a new residential area, and the Hengqin Extension Line (2 station expansions, 2.2 km) which runs to Hengqin in Mainland China from the opposite bank in Macau. The opening of the Seac Pai Van Extension Line is expected to improve transportation convenience by enabling access from the Macau Peninsula and Taipa Island to Seac Pai Van, and a newly built large general hospital. The Hengqin Extension Line is expected to increase traffic between the Macau Peninsula and Mainland China, further contributing to the development of the regional economy.

This project was executed under a three-company consortium with local general contractors Top Builders Macau Co. Ltd., Hou Chun Construction and Engineering Company Limited. MHI was responsible for delivering the Automated Guideway Transit(3) (AGT) system (excluding construction of station buildings and civil engineering work) such as the signals, communication systems, power supply facilities, trackwork, platform doors, and fare charge machines. In addition, total 110 cars (2 cars per trainsets) delivered by MHI for the Taipa Line will also be utilized on this Line. Currently, additional construction work for the East Line(4) (6 station expansions, 7.65 km) is underway of design and procurement phase. This will provide access to the Macau Peninsula and connection to the Chinese border gate near Gongbei.

Going forward, MHI Group will continue to work closely with its worldwide offices to provide services of high added value responding to customer needs, and supply new solutions such as the remote monitoring technology of "ΣSynX (Sigma Syncs) Supervision," MHI's digital innovation brand. In addition, through the provision of AGT Systems - a clean transport mode that emits no CO2 -, MHI Group aims to respond to regional aspirations around the globe with solutions that will contribute to economic development and enhanced transportation convenience, while simultaneously helping to realize a low-carbon society.

(1) The original abbreviation of LRT as "light rail transit" is widely used, but Macau LRT instead uses it to mean "light rapid transit" after the system's high-speed performance.
