Hyflux's Revolutionary InoCep Achieves Significant Energy and Cost Savings While Separating Liquids under Extreme Conditions
SIWW, Singapore, Jun 23, 2009 - (ACN Newswire) - Hyflux Ltd, one of the world's leading providers of integrated environmental solutions, today announced the launch of its second-generation hollow fibre ceramic membrane InoCep at the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) held at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre from 22 to 26 June 2009.
Hyflux's proprietary hollow fibre ceramic membrane technology has been internationally recognised. Its first-generation InoCep ceramic membrane was the Category Winner for the Water Treatment/ Point of Use at the International Aquatech Innovation Awards 2006 amidst keen competition from Europe, North America and Asia.
Building on its winning characteristics of originality, practicability and sustainability, the secondgeneration InoCep combines the simplicity and compactness of polymeric hollow fibre membranes with the hardiness of ceramics, making it suitable for highly demanding applications that involve high temperatures, pressures, and/ or aggressive solvents. Exploiting the superior characteristics of improved Al2O3, InoCep is capable of sustained filtration in temperatures of up to 120 deg. C and is able to withstand the full range of pH values (from 0 to 14). This compares favourably with existing membrane separation applications, which typically can only withstand temperatures below 100 deg. C and pH values from 1.5 - 11.
Another key feature is its hollow fibre configuration, which has the ability to filter from both "inside-out" and "outside-in". Its crossflow configuration also reduces fouling drastically, ensuring longer operating durations and less down time, all of which significantly reduce operating costs for users.
"The characteristics of the InoCep system makes it ideal for solving separation bottlenecks in a wide range of industries, such as metal/steel mill, chemical processing, food & beverage, biopharmaceuticals and many others," said Mr Roland Low, Director, Technology Commercialisation, Hyflux. "It offers our clients even higher flux and robust mechanical strength, and its configurations can be easily customised to suit many applications."
Australia-based H2O Industries Pty Ltd has benefited from the switch from channel ceramic membranes to InoCep in its treatment and recycling of laundry water. "With the switch, water can be recycled at the ideal washing temperature of 50 degrees C, resulting in energy savings of 22%. The permeate quality is also better, and we are also optimistic that the water recovery rate can be increased from the current 57% to 70-80%. We believe that it has been conclusively proven that InoCep can be used as the primary solution for laundry water recycling, and that it is an effective replacement for the old channel membrane philosophy," said Mr Kyle Wolff, General Manager.
With research and development ("R&D") centres spanning across Singapore, China and The Netherlands, Hyflux will continue to push innovative and cost-effective products in the mould of InoCep to market. It will also constantly update its knowledge base by tapping into ongoing membrane developments through linkages and collaborations with internationally-recognised research experts, reputable universities and renowned research institutions worldwide.
